Recipe Details
I love these Caprese Skewers because they are deliciously fresh and tasty. They’re great year round, but I especially love them in the summer when the tomatoes are sweetest and in season, and cold dishes taste the best. You’re going to love this simple recipe.
- TASTE: Sweet, cheesy, and tangy, these skewers are a mixture of lots of amazing flavors. And the seasonings add some salty, peppery goodness.
- TEXTURE: These Caprese Skewers have juicy tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, and crisp basil leaves. Topped with a syrupy glaze, they’re addictively good.
- TIME: This recipe only takes 5 minutes.
- EASE: With only a few ingredients and no cooking, this is quick, simple, and easy.
What You’ll Need
Ingredient Notes
- Mozzarella- Fresh mozzarella is rich and creamy. Get the ciliegine size, which is about the size of a cherry, making it perfect for these skewers.
- Cherry tomatoes- The size and flavor of these tomatoes make them just right for this recipe. Their sweetness goes well with the other ingredients.
- Basil- Use fresh basil for its aroma and herbaceous flavor.
- Balsamic glaze- This is a rich glaze that is sweet and tangy, the perfect accompaniment to the tomatoes and cheese.
- Salt and Black pepper
Add-ins and Substitutions
- Make your own balsamic glaze- You can make a balsamic reduction by boiling balsamic vinegar until it thickens, then letting it cool before drizzling it on the skewers.
- Use different tomatoes- Alternate yellow and red cherry tomatoes for an extra pop of color, or use grape tomatoes.
- Substitute another cheese- Caprese means using mozzarella, but you can still change things up with cubed cheddar, pepper jack, or Monterey jack cheese.
- Add olive oil- Drizzling extra virgin olive oil over the skewers adds a little richness to this crisp, fresh appetizer.
How to Make Caprese Skewers
- Skewer the cheese, tomatoes, and basil. Drain the water out of the mozzarella balls and then begin skewering the tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil on the plastic skewers.
- Season and glaze. Once everything is skewered on, add the salt and pepper and then drizzle on the balsamic glaze right before serving.
Pro Tip: For each skewer, I did 2 tomatoes, 2 basil leaves, and 1 mozzarella ball so that the cheese wouldn’t be overwhelming. This gives them a nice balance.
Recipe Tips
- Use ripe, but not too ripe, tomatoes– Avoid overripe cherry tomatoes because they will be mushy inside, making it hard for them to stay on the skewer and not break off.
- Use kosher salt- This salt tastes better than iodized salt and also has a little coarseness that is delicious, especially when you get a crunch of salt with all the other flavors.
- Add the glaze right before serving- You don’t want to add this too far in advance because as it sits, the glaze absorbs into the mozzarella, leaving it looking splotchy and brown.
FAQs
Caprese skewers can be made up to 24 hours in advance. Don’t add any balsamic glaze or seasonings until you serve them though because it can cause the tomatoes to release their liquid. Making them any earlier than that can lead to the tomatoes getting mushy and the basil wilting.

Make This Recipe in Advance
Make ahead: You can prepare the skewers a day ahead of time and keep them in the refrigerator in an airtight container. When you’re ready to serve, add the balsamic glaze, salt, and pepper.
Storing: Store any leftovers of these homemade Caprese Skewers in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the fridge.
Freeze: I don’t suggest freezing these skewers. The mozzarella and basil will thaw fine, but the tomatoes will be grainy and watery.
